89-18 Homing In on Your Target Reader

Jerry Jenkins

  1. Find a book similar to yours on Amazon.

  2. Assess who’s giving it positive reviews. Note their gender. Guess their ages. And determine what they look for in a book like this.

If you find it difficult to conjure a typical reader, just look in the mirror. Write to yourself.

I often do this.

Why?

Because I’m a typical reader and assume there are many more out there just like me.

My mantra is to think reader-first. I want to keep readers entertained, educated, and—most of all—emotionally moved. That keeps them turning the pages.

Knowing your reader will focus your writing more than ever.

Don’t give up on your dream.

Your voice deserves to be heard.
